Emma L. Freeman is Counsel at Justice Catalyst Law. Before joining JCL, Emma litigated an array of civil rights matters at Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel LLP, including cases relating to sexual abuse and assault; discrimination against and the wrongful death of persons with disabilities; misconduct and excessive force by police and correctional officers; children’s and students’ rights; housing and employment discrimination; wrongful convictions; and various constitutional questions. Notably, Emma’s litigation work led to reforming the New York Police Department’s and Yonkers Police Department’s discriminatory policies that required arrestees to remove religious head coverings for mug shots and enabling a woman-led sexual wellness company to advertise on New York City subways. Emma earned her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School and her B.A. from Yale University. She is based in Brooklyn, New York and is admitted to practice law in New York and Massachusetts.
