JC Fellow Amelia Caramadre at Action Lab at the Center for Health Policy & Law published an opinion piece in The Boston Globe on behalf of people with substance use disorders.
In the piece, Caramadre calls for city officials to provide resources to people with substance use disorders and not an increase in criminalizing them. This comes after Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s announcement that conditions at Mass and Cass have reached a “new level of public safety alarm.” “Mass and Cass” refers to the area populated with people who make their encampments along South Hampton and Atkinson streets.
“Increased criminalization of people with substance use disorders increases risk of overdose, disrupts treatment plans and services, and hinders housing opportunities. Instead, resources should be devoted to transitional and permanent housing options and harm reduction and treatment programs.” - JC Fellow Amelia Caramadre
