JC Fellow Kathryn Koch, based at the organization Health Law Advocates, fights to protect people from detrimental out-of-pocket health expenses through the Massachusetts Medical Debt Coalition. The Coalition includes advocates, legal services, and community organizations, who seek to support new legislative initiatives filed in the state.
According to Health Law Advocates, out-of-pocket health care expenses are one of the most pervasive barriers to health care and the cause of extreme financial hardship for people across Massachusetts and the entire United States. Medical bills prevent people from seeking medical care and covering the cost of their basic living expenses such as food, housing, and clothing. Race plays a role in medical debt, as well. People of color, particularly Black people, are far more likely to be burdened with unaffordable medical debt in the U.S.
